NextEra Analytics: Power Grid Data Science

At the end of my senior year of high school, I conducted a one-month mentorship at NextEra Analytics, the big data arm of a major renewable energy company. I worked on a load forecasting problem, trying to predict a city’s power consumption based on the weather, and an electric vehicle load simulation, trying to ascertain when a given household was charging an electric vehicle based on the household’s power consumption. The results themselves are not particuarly groundbreaking (see the links for more technical details), but these projects helped me gain proficiency with the tools underlying data science and basic machine learning in Python while learning about the electrical grid from a lead data scientist.
